- Around $3/chip. There are three chips on the 1200/4000 Motherboards. The
- cost adds up to about $10 for all of them. This is 1/16th the cost of the
- whole motherboard. The expensive parts are:
-
- ╖ 2 MB SRAM. This puppy costs about $100 and is 2/3 of the system price
- ╖ 68EC020 CPU. Motorola still charges about $20-30 for this
-
- Of course, the multilayer board is not cheap either. The RAM could be
- reduced in cost by using multiport D-RAM (like VRAM or WRAM). It would be
- faster than the 80ns SRAM, and cheaper to implement.
- AGA is not archaic. The 32-Bit, 28MHz BUS is. This is where the Amiga
- is really lacking. Also, support for new screen modes, and 8/16/24bpp modes.
- Of course, the AGAExtender concept covers most of this, and is an excellent
- idea. Amiga Technologies should consider this one.
- Phoning around, I have found that the AGA Chipset with the AGA Extender
- all on one chip (chip RAM is external) would cost about $50-60 in bulk. Not
- including development costs of course. This would add $40 to the system,
- which could be saved by using cheaper, faster DRAM. Of course, reducing to
- one chip would save a lot on board size.
